Judge Denies Motion to Dismiss Felony Animal Cruelty Charges Against Arcata Rancher Ray Christie
Judge Christopher Wilson has denied a defense motion to dismiss felony animal cruelty charges against Arcata rancher Ray Christie, whose second jury trial is now set for August.

This afternoon Wilson heard and rejected arguments from defense attorney John Cogorno, who said Wilson wrongly dismissed a juror in Christie’s December 2019 trial. Cogorno also argued Wilson should have accepted the partial verdict the jury reached before the miscreant juror was kicked off the panel. Instead she was replaced by an alternate, and the jury scrapped six days of deliberations and started over.

A local man arrested in Utah with triple-murder suspect Mauricio Eduardo Johnson was arraigned in a Utah court today on a charge of being a fugitive from justice.
Von Eric Keener, 46, appeared via video before Judge Dianna Gibson in Third District Court, Tooele County. Gibson told Keener he is a charged with being a fugitive, and he has “a no-bail warrant out of California.”
“OK,” Keener responded.
Asked if he wanted an attorney, Keener said “I have no job. Am I going to need an attorney, or are they just going to come and pick me up?”
TODAY in COURT: Accused West Del Norte Shooter Pleads Not Guilty; Sex Trafficking Suspect Hopes for Deal; Waterfront Murder Trial Delayed Again
A Eureka man suspected of a recent shooting on West Del Norte Street pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder and a variety of drug and weapons charges.
Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo entered the pleas on behalf of Braylan Jay Lanier, suspected of attempting to kill a 37-year-old man who was shot several times and left lying in the street the night of Jan. 14.
Judge Timothy Canning ordered Lanier, 26, to be held without bail because he was out of jail on supervised release when he allegedly shot the other man. Bail on the attempted murder charge was set at $750,000.
