Passengers on American Airlines flight 1204 from Costa Rica to Miami endured a seven-hour delay on Tuesday due to some pretty unusual circumstances.
According to a report from travel news site View from the Wing, the flight crew was robbed at gunpoint while they were en route from their hotel to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José.
Per the report, the perpetrators littered debris on the road, and when the driver stopped to clear a path, the thieves entered the vehicle brandishing weapons.
American Airlines confirmed the news in a statement to View from The Wing:
“We are aware that our crew members unfortunately fell victim to a crime while en route to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) on March 16,” said American Airlines spokesperson Sarah Jantz.
Costa Rican authorities detained two passengers on suspicion that they had presented falsified coronavirus test results when trying to leave the country, according to a report from CRHoy.
The Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) provided a short statement of the events that occurred at Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José, Costa Rica.
One of the arrested passengers is a Brazilian who intended to fly to Brazil. The second case is a Venezuelan who was also presenting documentation for two minors who were flying to Colombia.
“In both cases, the test lacked legitimacy after confrontations carried out with the authorized laboratories,” the OIJ reported.
Since July, the Health Ministry has worked alongside the country’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) and the National Statistics Institute (INEC) to analyze Costa Rica’s COVID-19-related deaths.
The team of forensic and medical experts is determining how many of Costa Rica’s coronavirus-related deaths were actually caused by COVID-19 or an associated complication.
Of the 464 deaths analyzed so far, more than 90% have been confirmed to have resulted from the SARS-CoV-2 virus or a related complication.
“The virus provoked their death,” Health Minister Daniel Salas explained last year of people who fell under this designation.
Forty-five of the 464 deaths resulted from causes not related to COVID-19 “and coincidentally, the virus was present when they died.”
