Charlottesville set to remove Confederate Gen Lee statue that sparked rally

Lee that became a rallying point for white supremacists and helped inspire their infamous 2017 rally in Charlottesville was hoisted off its pedestal Saturday and sent to storage. The Lee statue and another Confederate tribute nearby were both removed Saturday, nearly four years after violence erupted at the “Unite the Right” rally. The chaos left 32-year-old protester Heather Heyer dead and sparked a national debate over racial equity, further inflamed by former President Donald Trump’s insistence that there was “blame on both sides.”

The city announced a statue of Robert E. Lee as well as a nearby one depicting Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson would be removed on Saturday. The stone bases of the statues are set to remain temporarily, with a later date expected to be set for complete removal. This comes after years of campaigning by civil rights activists, who have asserted they promoted white supremacy and racist ideals, to remove the statues.
