Ramona and Canice Nicholas to get €400,000 in Cara pharmacies exit deal

Former RTÉ Dragons’ Den presenter Ramona Nicholas and her husband Canice Nicholas are to receive a total of €400,000 as part of a deal in their exit from the Cara Group of pharmacies, a High Court judge was told. Mr Justice Denis McDonald said, while he was “troubled” by what had happened, and by the amount of the payment – which the couple had wanted to be kept confidential – he had concluded it had not unfairly prejudiced interested parties, particularly creditors. Part of the sum is €29,000 in redundancy payments to each of them with the remaining €342,000 representing an “ex gratia payment on the termination of their employment” and to include non-compete clauses.

Glimmer of hope for beleaguered pub trade

A glimmer of hope for a beleaguered trade is how a publicans representative has described the recent High Court ruling that four pub owners are entitled to be compensated by insurer FBD for the disruption their businesses suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Collette Nugent, president of the Louth Vintners Federation of Ireland said a good percentage of local members have FBD policies, though following this precedent she added all insurers will have to pay out. In a landmark decision, the outcome of which affects claims made by some 1,000 Irish pubs and restaurants, Mr Justice Denis McDonald found that a policy sold by FBD covered losses the pubs in question sustained by having to close due to the global health emergency.
