The striking Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has rejected the 36 state governors’ proposed template for the implementation of judiciary’s financial autonomy being demanded by the workers.
The governors, in their proposal, seek the creation of a State Account Allocation Committee (SAAC) to oversee the distribution of funds to the three arms of government at the state level.
But in a communique the union issued after a May 8 meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC), the union insisted on its demand that funds meant for the state judiciaries must be deducted directly from the federation account and paid to the heads of courts through the National Judicial Council (NJC).

THE strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has received the tacit support of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, who declared that the reasons for the action were genuine.
The CJN said it had become difficult to fault the idea of the strike since the rights of the union and its members, which had been clearly defined in the constitution, were being denied, especially at state levels.
“I can’t fault your reasons for embarking on this protest because the union wants its rights restored in line with the provisions of the constitution. I commend you for following due process so far to protest against the injustice,” the CJN said during a meeting he had with JUSUN national leaders in Abuja on Wednesday.
Executives of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, have again, met with the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, to explain why they would not suspend the strike action they commenced on April 6 to demand for the implementation of financial autonomy for the Judiciary.

The meeting held at the CJN’s chambers in Supreme Court was to give him feedback on his request for the strike to be called off.
The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hadjia Hadiza Uwani Mustapha also attended the meeting.
The CJN had, at an earlier meeting with JUSUN leaders on April 6, asked the union to call off the strike given its adverse effect on the justice system in the country.
