Const. Kim Carroll recalls a young girl she once had some interaction with during her job as a police officer.
Now a school resource officer (SRO), Carroll found out the girl now a teenager was a student at one of the schools where the constable works.

“She remembered me,” Carroll says. “It’s really helped her in coming to talk to me about things that are going on at home … I think we all have success stories.”

In a 17-minute video posted to YouTube, a large group of cyclists on BMX bikes filmed themselves riding around town, weaving in and out of traffic and doing tricks. They’re eventually stopped by police at least twice, with one interaction ending in applause and the other with a teenager in handcuffs.
“It’s not for the level obviously (of) a George Floyd or Breonna Taylor situation, but it definitely connects on the level of police power, because that’s what this is,” said Jason Williams, an assistant professor of Justice Studies at Montclair State University who co-edited a book on Black men’s interactions with the criminal justice system. “It’s, ‘I have the power to inconvenience you, to arrest you, to make things harder for you, and I’m going to do it.’”

The Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society works to improve the health and stewardship of B.C.’s fifth largest lake, and although the COVID-19 pandemic has curtailed much of FoKLSS’ traditional outreach and education programs, Acting Program Manager Camille LeBlanc has been leading the charge on a number of initiatives that are helping keep Kootenay Lake at the forefront of people’s minds.
Camille joined the FoKLSS team in 2019 as the Environmental Manager Intern and hit the ground running planning and implementing education programs and public events such as the Youth Water Festival and the Kootenay Lake Summit. Both events allowed Camille to connect with a network of environmental leaders in the Kootenay Lake area, and learn the fundamentals of running successful community events. At the end of 2019, Camille moved into the Program Manager role.
