Vivian Gornick. (Photo by Joan Bingham) Vivian Gornick’s writing has often given me the sensation of finding myself in the same place but much changed. This is as true of her criticism and journalism as it is of her memoirs a straightforward and piercing desire for rediscovery conquers the text, no matter its voice. Perhaps this can help account for why a writing career that has persisted across five decades has in the past couple years been enthusiastically reexamined and reissued by ascendant generations of feminists, and Gornick herself. BOOKS Taking a Long Look: Essays on Culture, Literature and Feminism in Our Time

AT 84, New York grande dame Vivian Gornick is having a significant renaissance after a lifetime of filing first-rate copy. A late-night dash for freedom in the opening chapter is just the start of a border-crossing relay race that spans the Western Hemisphere. Engel’s pacing is breathless she covers three generations in under 200 pages but just as frequently gives way to heart- and time-stopping moments. Infinite Country is poised to be one of the most stirring page-turners of the year.
