In a quiet pre-holiday week, the only race we re following is a Democratic primary in Alabama. Next Tuesday, all eyes will be on the special election in New Mexico s first congressional district.
Alabama State House District 78 Primary (Democratic)
There are 105 State House districts in Alabama. The chamber is dominated by Republicans, who hold a 76-27 advantage. There are vacancies in Districts 73 and 78. The District 73 general special election will be on July 13.
The District 78 vacancy was created by the resignation of Democrat Kirk Hatcher after he won a special election for an open State Senate seat.
On the Republican side, Loretta Grant was the only qualifier. There will be no party primary.

A steady stream of people arrived to drop off their mail-in ballots and cast their votes in polling places for Pennsylvania s primary election day Tuesday. However, in most polling locations the long lines visible during the Presidential election of 2020 were gone.
In York County, leaders told FOX43 they counted nearly 100,000 mail-in ballots for the Presidential election. In 2021, the county was expecting 25,564. As of Tuesday morning the county had received 16,016 of those votes. Once again in Pennsylvania, counties were not allowed to begin the process of opening mail-in ballots until 7 am on election day. Overall in Pennsylvania, 800,000 people requested a mail-in ballot.
Election Returns Website Will Provide First Look at Tuesday’s Primary Election Results

Harrisburg, PA – With Tuesday s municipal primary election just one day away, Acting Secretary of State Veronica W. Degraffenreid today reminded Pennsylvanians that the Department of State s election night returns website offers up-to-the-minute results. The public, candidates and the media can find the most complete picture of how Pennsylvanians voted on our election returns site, Secretary Degraffenreid said. We collaborate with all 67 county election offices to consolidate results as soon as they are available.
The electionreturns.pa.gov site will provide for each race a breakdown of votes cast at polling places on Election Day, votes cast by mail ballot and votes cast by provisional ballot. The department will post unofficial results on the site as it receives reports from counties after the polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day.
