As Maharashtra stares at a full-blown medical crisis amid ever-surging COVID-19 cases and fatalities, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written to the Prime Minister urging him to declare the pandemic a natural disaster and give economic relief to those most affected.
Given the acute shortage of oxygen, Mr. Thackeray, in his letter on Thursday, appealed to the Centre to take action under the National Disaster Management Act to supply vital oxygen by air.
Relief measures
In his letter, Mr. Thackeray detailed the relief measures that could be accorded to Maharashtra’s citizens which include a three-month extension of the timeline for filing GST returns for small and medium taxpayers.

State government announces restrictions on people coming from other States.
The Odisha government on Thursday urged the Centre to supply 10-days stock of the vaccine and at least ₹300 crore for COVID-19 management for 2021-22.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took up many issues during the discussion on the pandemic with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Odisha has been doing well in vaccination programme with the lowest wastage and efficient administration to eligible persons. We have not been able to ramp up the vaccination due to supply issues,” Mr. Patnaik said.
“We are able to vaccinate 2.5 lakh persons per day and have the capacity to increase it further. We request that at least 10 days stock of the vaccines is ensured for Odisha.”

Chandigarh, March 17 : As active Covid-19 cases in the state surged to 12,616, with daily positivity rate climbing to over five per cent, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday urged the Centre to review its immunization strategy to vaccinate all age groups in selected areas, while announcing a stricter policy to deal with the problem.
The Chief Minister also called for occupation-based immunization for school and college students and teachers, judges, bus drivers and conductors, etc., to pave the way for normalisation of crucial activities and check super-spreaders.
