After a drawn-out drafting process, the Ohio Department of Health’s top spokeswoman agreed to stamp ODH’s name on a statement with the Ohio NAACP and Commission on Minority Health correcting a myth that racial minorities are less susceptible to COVID-19.
However, communications director Arundi Venkayya clarified in an April 1, 2020 email that ODH would not send out the statement independently because the department is instead focused on the “direct operational response” to the nascent pandemic.
She said CMH could release the statement on its own.
Chip Allen, ODH’s director of health equity who worked to craft the statement with the NAACP and CMH, warned the refusal would send the wrong message. Angela Dawson, CMH’s executive director, said she was concerned as well why would ODH authorize a statement but withhold it from its established networks and unique authority on Ohio’s pandemic response?

New records in Cal Fire training death
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) â The girlfriend of a local CAL FIRE firefighter who died after a routine training exercise says his death could have been prevented.
For six months, ABC10 News reviewed records that reveal that the state found the former captain who oversaw the training exercise to be incompetent and dishonest during the investigation.
That former captain has since been demoted, but it may only be temporary.
Documents obtained by ABC10 News show that he will be eligible to get his position back. CAL FIRE told ABC10 News that it conducted a thorough investigation into his actions, and it remains committed to the safety of its employees.
Ernie Cook was fired from the position Jan. 21 by Trumbull County commissioners.
He filed a notice that he intends to appeal the firing with the State Personnel Board of Review.
Commissioners were served notice of the appeal.
Because it is an initial filing of the intention to appeal the firing, documents lack specific arguments about Cook’s objection to his firing.
Cook declined to comment further on the points he intends to argue in the appeal process.
Commissioners retained legal counsel Wednesday to handle the appeal. They hired Gallagher Sharp LLP of Cleveland for up to $10,000. They selected outside counsel after reviewing proposals from two different companies, and because the prosecutor’s office has a conflict in handling the case, commissioners said.
As we’ll discuss shortly, Apollo had commissioned an whitewash investigation by law firm Dechert to reassure investors that nothing too unsavory had happened, and get them to stop their capital strike against the giant fund. However, the Financial Times reported yesterday that the UN’s pension fund is keeping Apollo on a watch list and the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System is sticking to its guns: From the Financial Times:
A report by lawyers for Apollo Global Management into the ties between Leon Black and the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein is “not enough” to remove the company from a watch list of investments that require extra scrutiny, a top UN pension fund official has said…
