Briefs Share Deadline for Senior College classes approaches The registration deadline for community members to sign-up to attend the Senior College’s slate of February online winter classes is Jan. 27. Eight virtual classes will be offered on Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 2-25. Classes will include “Maine Turtles and the Turtles of Holt Pond Preserve,” Feb. 2; “Global Economic, Market and Geopolitical Outlook,” Feb. 4; “Poems of Spring” Feb. 9; “Donald Baxter MacMillan, Arctic Explorer,” Feb. 11; “Page Break – Question of Principles,” Feb. 16; “Tennessee Williams Movie Adaptations,” Feb. 18; “Realism to Semi-Abstraction,” Feb. 23; and “Ghosts and Ghost Towns of the White Mountains,” Feb. 5.

MHSAA Volleyball Returns Tuesday, Four SW Michigan Teams Remain The continued effort to complete the Michigan High School Athletic Association s fall sports schedule continues this week with the final week of Girls Volleyball statewide. The postseason for volleyball was stopped in mid-November, just before the final three rounds were set to be completed. After two whole months and the pilot program for COVID-19 testing in place for the fall sports, the sport s tournament will continue with its State Finals coming this Saturday, January 16 th. The good news is that the venue for the State Semifinals and Finals will remain the same as it has since the first Fall season of Girls Volleyball in 2007. Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek will host the Semifinal rounds on Thursday, January 14

High School Fall Playoffs Pushed Back Farther

The MHSAA announced December 23 rd for Football, Volleyball, and Girls Swimming and Diving had to stop practices again to allow the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to properly instruct coaches and administrators how to properly administer the rapid antigen tests the student-athletes will be taking while preparing for competition to return. These three sports are the only sports to still have their postseason tournaments left to complete and were placed in a pilot program to use the tests. The MDHHS is helping distribute the tests at no costs to schools that were originally slated to go to senior and long-term living homes. Those homes are receiving the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Chittle Bridget Puetz and Meagan Schleifer, of Traverse City, made the fall 2020 dean’s list at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana. Sarah Chouinard, of Traverse City, was named to the fall 2020 dean’s list at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin. TBA Credit Union recently awarded a $1,000 classroom grant to Janine Winkler and another $1,000 grant to Alicia Richards. Winkler, an Immaculate Conception Elementary School Science and Innovation facilitator, hopes to purchase robotics kits for kindergarten through fifth graders. Richards, an instructional aide at Traverse City West Middle School, will use the funds to set up and purchase supplies for a sick room.

Westborough High School student wins Lions Youth Speech Contest

Westborough High School student wins Lions Youth Speech Contest Community Content Westborough High School Venya Khare recently won the Westborough Lions Club s Youth Speech Contest for 2020-21.  She, together with seniors Neil Kale, Nikita Sarin, and freshman, Nicole Nguyen, participated in this year s contest with speeches on the topic of “Is winning everything?” Due to the pandemic, the competition was held via Zoom. This is the sixth year that the Westborough Lions have sponsored the contest.  Each student s speech was to be no less than five minutes and no more than eight minutes in length. Point penalties were assessed for any deviation from these parameters. At this local level contest, the students were allowed to read directly from their manuscripts. Three independent judges critiqued each speech on delivery, effectiveness and text. The student with the most first place finishes as determined by the judges using their scoring matrices was deemed the winner.
