Webinar on Electoral System of Fiji: Electoral Formula and Ballot Design

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in the presence of our Melanesian Partners held the first webinar of the Democratic Development in Melanesia Webinar Series 2021 on 31 March. The webinar’s topic was “ Electoral System of Fiji: Electoral Formula and Ballot Paper Design”. This webinar focused on Fiji and it was designed to help iron out misunderstandings and misgivings about the electoral system in place in Fiji. The 2013 Constitution of Fiji and subsequent electoral legal framework introduced substantial changes to Fiji’s electoral system and processes, marking the departure from Fiji’s previous constitutions since gaining independence in 1970.

Govt should go into caretaker mode after dissolution of parliament – Lal Govt should go into caretaker mode after dissolution of parliament – Lal Dialogue Fiji Executive Director Nilesh Lal (left) Dialogue Fiji has recommended the government should go into caretaker mode and be referred to in the media and elsewhere as a caretaker administration after the dissolution of parliament. The non-governmental organisation has been working in the area of inclusive and participatory decision making, democratic transition, good governance, conflict analysis and peace-building since 2009. They made a submission today to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights on the electoral bills before the committee.

Dialogue Fiji welcomes proposed changes to Electoral Bill

March 3, 2021 4:40 pm Dialogue Fiji has welcomed the changes proposed in the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2020 for party names and symbols on the ballot papers. The initial provision’s in the Electoral Act’s section 36 state that the national candidates’ list must not contain any party name or symbol. Dialogue Fiji believes the amendment eliminates the need to redesign ballot papers. Article continues after advertisement Executive Director for Dialogue Fiji, Nilesh Lal, says the amendment will decrease the incidents of unintended votes. “Inclusion of this information on the national candidate list which is available to all voters in the voting booth will expect a decrease in the number of unintended votes.”
