Canberra architecture students awarded Alastair Swayn Internship
Three up-and-coming Canberra architecture students have been awarded the 2021 Alastair Swayn Internship, which was established to honour Mr Swayn’s contribution to the ACT.
Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman congratulated University of Canberra Masters of Architecture students Daniel Sandford, Marco Torbarian and Cassidy Baas for their successful applications.
“The students will undertake a research assignment and receive mentorship from ACT Government Architect Catherine Townsend. This will support them as they investigate topics related to the physical, environmental and social effects of growth in Canberra,” Minister Gentleman said.
“Each of them will also receive a $2,500 research grant from the Alastair Swayn Foundation on assignment completion, which includes the opportunity for publication.

A new breeding facility for the endangered Grassland Earless Dragon was today launched at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve following the arrival of 6 dragons from Melbourne Zoo.
Minister for the Environment Rebecca Vassarotti and Minister for Land Management Mick Gentleman formally opened the facility and thanked Melbourne Zoo for their support in establishing the colony and sharing their expertise in conserving this important species.
“Australia is facing an extinction crisis. If we are to halt and reverse the damage we’re doing to our natural environment, we must challenge ourselves, and test and trial approaches to tackle extinction rates and re-introduce native fauna back into the wild,” Minister Vassarotti said.

SIZE limits of shopping centres have been relaxed under a significant change to planning laws to revitalise a sagging retail industry.
The ACT government has signed off to expand the floor space from 1000sq m to 1500sq m that also ensures suburban retail outlets can secure supermarkets as anchor tenants.
It reverses a controversial 2015 red-tape decision made on regulations restricting the size of shops that has threatened their viability.
The latest move has also breathed new life into the Giralang development, near Belconnen, which has sat dormant for more than 15 years.
Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said new draft variation laws are basically in effect immediately with the submission of development applications.
