Two large manure spills in Iowa on Thursday are killing a lot of fish, according to state officials.
Hundreds of thousands of gallons are estimated to have spilled into creeks in the state, according to news releases from the state s Department of Natural Resources.
In one spill, the department said Precision Pumping, a commercial manure application company, was land applying manure when a hose came off a pump on its rig. The hose flopped into Lotts Creek, and an estimated 10,000 gallons of the substance flowed into the creek before the system could be shut down, the department said.

Several hundred thousand gallons of manure spilled into a Lyon County creek Wednesday and, in a separate incident on the same day, another 10,000 gallons of manure also spilled into a Kossuth County creek that flows into the Des Moines River.
In Rock Rapids, Bernie Baker of Rock Bottom Dairy reported spilling several hundred thousand gallons of manure after an irrigation unit became stuck, according to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources news release Wednesday evening.
The manure flowed through fields, which included cover crops or pasture, before it eventually flowed northwest of Rock Rapids and into Mud Creek, according to the DNR. When DNR staff arrived at the creek at about 3:20 p.m., many dead fish, including bullheads, minnows and chubs, were found on the scene.

The agency says the first was northwest of Rock Rapids. The DNR says a dairy reported spilling several hundred thousand gallons of manure after an irrigation unit got stuck. The liquid manure flowed through fields, including some with cover crops or pasture. It reached a tributary of Mud Creek and then flowed into the creek itself. DNR staff reported finding âmany dead fishâ when they arrived on the scene Wednesday afternoon.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Iowa environmental officials are investigating two separate manure spills into state creeks that led to fish kills in both tributaries.
Both spills occurred Wednesday, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The first saw “several hundred thousand” gallons of livestock manure spilled into Mud Creek in Lyons County in the northwestern corner of Iowa. The second saw about 10,000 gallons of manure spilled into Kossuth County’s Lotts Creek in north central Iowa. Investigators reported finding a large number of dead fish at both sites.
