When our sons decided to attend universities in the U.S., the reaction from British friends was usually incredulity mixed with pity. It’s not that they thought we’d miss the boys; they worried we’d miss our retirement.
They also struggled to see the point. There are excellent universities closer to home at a fraction of the cost. Britain is a giant in higher education in its own right. Its universities are disproportionately represented on international league tables, and it’s the largest destination for American students studying abroad. The application process is also easier, and selection, even at the top, is often less competitive than elite U.S. schools. Why make life harder?

Shwe Einthe was about to leave her Washington apartment to grab a bite to eat when an emergency message blared on her cellphone, alerting her to violence at the U.S. Capitol building and a 6 p.m. citywide curfew. My first thought was, Oh, my God, this feels like dictator Myanmar, like I am back in my developing country, said Einthe, an international student at George Washington University. This doesn t happen in the States, curfew doesn t happen in the States. That happens in countries like mine.
Like other international students in the U.S., Einthe said she was shocked by the violent protests over President Donald Trump s election loss on January 6 and how closely they resembled political violence some international students have experienced in their home countries.
In response to the rising number of Vietnamese students coming to study in America, colleges have begun sending more recruiters to Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.
