Bob Calhoun was having lunch at a Peruvian restaurant in Redwood City when his father dropped the bomb.
“You know your mom was a suspect in that murder …”
“That murder” was the killing of August Norry, shot 18 times in 1959 near the San Francisco/Daly City border by “a young blonde woman.” Before the real perp was arrested and that’s quite a story every young, pretty blond woman in the neighborhood, including Calhoun’s mother, was being questioned.

February 29th, 2020 I was in Denver Colorado with the Tino Cochino crew for the Tyga and Doja Cat concert. The Fillmore Auditorium was jam packed and we had a blast. Little did any of us know that would be our last major concert for over year. l remember the crowd rapping in unison, the energy in the room was incredible and when Tyga brought Doja out to do Juicy. people lost their minds. Needless to say we had such a great night. A few weeks later we we re in the pandemic lockdown and the thought of mass gatherings disappeared.

When I moved to the Bay Area in Northern California in 1962 I settled in Santa Clara, where I was to go to school. San Francisco was a Mecca to me back then. The whole Beat headspace had been calling my name for years. Santa Clara was a backwater, but San Francisco was less than fifty miles away. As soon as I was able to find a like-minded spirit with a car, we saddled up and headed north up the 101.
North Beach had been calling my name for a long time. Coming back from the Philippines some months before, a stop at an English-speaking bookstore in Tokyo had outfitted me with some Henry Miller books… hard if not impossible to find in the States back then. At City Lights Bookstore there on Columbus Avenue in North Beach, all things were possible from The Rosy Crucifixion to Black Spring. That was 59 years ago, and at that callow age all things were still possible.
