Lava River Cave, located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District, will be closing early this season to allow work in the area to improve visitor services. Beginning Monday, August 23, 2021 Lava River Cave will be closed to complete work that will improve visitor access, mitigate tripping hazards, and increase overall public safety around the cave. The Deschutes National Forest is following fire mitigations under the stipulations of the current Industrial Fire Precaution Leve IV including pre-wetting vegetation, site weather monitoring, and fire-fighting resources located on site and will continuously monitor for any fire hazards. Deschutes National Forest Site Pass
Located on the eastern slopes of the Cascades in Central Oregon, the Deschutes National Forest offers year-round recreation opportunities. Home to more than 1.6 million acres, including 5 wilderness areas and 2 scenic byways, the Forest spans a varieties of landscapes and ecosystems.
At this time, we are offering single day passes only. Annual passes can be purchased on the National Forest websites, at National Forest visitor centers, or at approved vendor locations.

Road Testing Begins Along Three Creeks Road
Beginning today (May 17), and continuing through Friday of next week, engineers will be conducting roadway testing along Forest Service Road (FSR) 16 (Three Creeks Road).
The roadway testing is necessary for planning the future design of the repaving of FSR 16. This testing will occur along approximately 10 miles of the paved roadway. Engineering specialists will be on site from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout the week.
The public traveling along FSR 16 may experience some travel delays. Flaggers will be directing traffic during the roadway testing.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Newberry National Volcanic Monument south of Bend will open many of its sites for summer visitors next week, with limited capacity due to COVID-19, the Deschutes National Forest said Friday.
Beginning on Thursday, Lava River Cave will open for daily operations through Sunday, August 22. The site will close on August 23 for the rest of the season for construction activities to improve access to the cave.
For COVID-19 mitigations, the entrance gate to the cave will open at 9 a.m. but will close intermittently for brief periods of time during the day to help manage crowd size in the cave and parking lot. Closures of the gate will not be scheduled and typically will be limited to 30 minutes. The entrance gate will close daily at 3:45 p.m.
