FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Staffing issues at the Fairbanks Police Department have forced officers to work extra hours to try to keep Fairbanks safe. The department is short 11 positions from total of the 45 they are budgeted for. Fairbanks Police Chief Ron Dupee told us, “Staffing shortages create over-time. It creates problems with us getting, you know, the amount of people on the road that we like. We have minimum staffing levels that we have to meet to provide the quality and service that Fairbanks demands.”

Four former employees — including former Fairbanks Police Chief Nancy Reeder — stepped forward to talk about gender-based discrimination in the police department to support the claim of Alana Malloy, who quit and sued the city earlier this week. Former Detective Malloy, who has worked for the department for 16 years, left the department and filed a complaint Monday, saying that she experienced “hostility and retaliation” after “standing up against sexual harassment and discrimination,” according to her resignation letter and complaint filed in Alaska Superior Court. Reeder and three former officers — Peggy Sullivan, Spencer DeWaele and Alex Wells — reached out to Malloy’s attorney, James Davis, to support Malloy’s claim. ANCHORAGE (AP) — The only female detective in the Fairbanks Police Department cited relentless sexual harassment when quitting on the spot Monday. Alana Malloy, a 16-year department veteran, also cited retaliation after she spoke up as other grounds for her resignation Monday, Alaska s News Source reported. She also has filed a lawsuit against the department. It s unfortunate that any female officer should feel like they have to put up with a certain amount of this just to participate in this field, Malloy said. While I acknowledge former Detective Malloy s contributions to the department and the community, I m quite disturbed by the many gross misrepresentations, and outright falsehoods, stated in her resignation letter, Fairbanks Police Chief Ron Dupee said in a email to the Anchorage television station.
