FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - After an unprecedented year studying in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, 10 students from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Community and Technical College (CTC) Paramedic Program have graduated from the Academy’s intensive three-semester program. The majority of the students of the Paramedic Academy are residents of Alaska with students from the Interior, Valdez, and Scammon Bay. Students completed their internships in Connecticut, Mississippi, Texas, Nevada, and Oregon during the summer. With the help of CTC industry partners, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Fairbanks Fire Department, the students from the 2020 -2021 Paramedic Academy were able to gain valuable real world experience.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - With fire season going strong in the Interior, the Fairbanks Fire Department has advice to offer on creating a evacuation plan in the event of a home fire. According to Moira Townsend, Deputy Fire Marshal For the City of Fairbanks Fire Department, the most important first step to home fire safety is having well placed smoke detectors. “The most important thing you can have in your house in the event of a fire is working smoke alarms. You want to have them in every bedroom and one on at least every floor of the house, and as soon as you hear the alarm go off and you are made aware that there’s a fire, it’s important to evacuate.”

Two firefighters injured in Monday warehouse blaze

Two firefighters from the Fairbanks Fire Department received minor injuries during Monday s warehouse fire in South Fairbanks. The firefighters were treated at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and are expected to recover quickly, according to a Tuesday news release from the city of Fairbanks. Besides the two firefighters, no one was hurt. The firefighters are feeling OK, and the chief expects them back to work in a week, Teal Soden, communications director for the city, wrote in an email to the News-Miner.  The fire started at C&R Pipe and Steel on Alta Way at approximately 3.30 p.m. Monday. Emergency crews responded within 6 minutes, put the fire out by approximately 7:54 p.m., and stayed on scene to take care of hot spots until 10:22 p.m.

Coal Dust Fire Breaks Out at Power Plant

Firefighters were called to a coal dust fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the Aurora Energy power plant in Fairbanks, AK, according to local news reports and information from the local fire department. Crews from several fire departments responded to the 1 st Avenue facility at about 12:30 a.m. and worked for several hours to douse the flames, the City of Fairbanks Fire Department said in a statement posted to Facebook. The scene was cleared later that morning. Another small fire broke out inside the facility on February 16. Television news station KTVF said that fire personnel were able to extinguish the fire within 20 or 30 minutes. A fire official said that coal dust may have fueled that blaze.
