The city witnessed its first full-fledge live concert on Saturday since the pandemic erupted
KARACHI:
Karachi was set for two very different concerts on Saturday night but only one of them went through. Atif Aslam’s much-awaited concert at Benazir Bhutto Park was cancelled after organisers ‘failed to obtain required permissions,’ confirmed a post on Aslam’s official Facebook page. This is the story of the concert that went through.
Upcoming acts Karakoram, Kashmir along with Battle of the Bands participant Neon ended Karachi’s Covid-streak of no concerts at District 19 in Korangi Industrial Area. The backstage seemed like an alumni dinner of sorts; even those who weren’t performing, such as Asim Azhar, Tamasha, and Auj, showed up to mark their existence and show gratitude for a live gig that eventually went forward uninterrupted.

“Judas and the Black Messiah” has been named best film by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), leading the list of winners at the 12th AAFCA awards with four awards, including accolades for stars Daniel Kaluuya and Dominique Fishback. Director Shaka King will also be honored with the breakout director prize.
“Serving alongside an all-Black producing team, “Judas and the Black Messiah” director Shaka King created a project that permanently enshrines pivotal Black Panther leader Fred Hampton as an American hero,” AAFCA President/Co-Founder Gil Robertson said in a statement announcing the winners. “Released against the backdrop of the present-day Black Lives Matter movement, the film’s message of commitment and sacrifice to social justice is empowering.”

Oscar voting is wrapping on Wednesday, but it
ain’t over ’til it’s over. Film distributor Neon, the reigning champion at the Academy Awards for best picture with “Parasite,” has another stack of contenders this year, all unique in awards discussions. CEO and co-founder Tom Quinn has always pushed the boundaries of cinema, and deeply believes in cultural representation in front and behind the camera, and the way consumers and Academy voters accept the film medium.
The Silver Cos.â latest proposal is NEON, a 50,000-square-foot club facility company officials say will offer âhigh-end work and recreational space for professionalsâ and bring the âamenities of big-city social and professional clubs to growing communities.â
NEON is a type of co-working center that would offer conference space, sound-proof booths and business services for those who donât want to commute, but also want an attractive alternative to working at home. The centers would also include fitness and spa facilities, a resort-style pool and cabana club with event space, as well as virtual-reality sports simulators, a rooftop terrace and gathering spaces.

Oscar season is always a mixed bag for movie lovers. For many, it’s a chance to heap praise and awards on the best films of last year, but for most others, it’s an exclusive horse race for which they’ve only seen a few of the contenders. Arthouse movies are just that films for the arthouse, frequently only seen at film festivals or during limited theatrical releases, and often not available for the wider audience to see until long after the Oscar ceremony is over. But
NEON is making all six of their Oscar shortlisted titles available to anyone with an account on the movie review website
