St Augustine restaurants are booming, but staffing is a problem

Now, with vaccination rates on the rise and case numbers declining, diners are back in full force. Service employees, however, are not. The hospitality industry is facing a crippling labor shortage that, at worst, is closing down businesses and, at best, forcing establishments to cut service hours even as they are enjoying some of the best sales they ve had since before the pandemic. Patricia McElmore, owner and general manager of the Ice Plant Bar in St. Augustine, has advertised for cooks, dishwashers, food runners and hosts through Facebook, Indeed and other online platforms. McElmore got one strong lead from a pool of about 20 to 30 applicants.
