LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) â Law enforcement agencies across the nation are struggling to fill vacant positions, and Kentuckyâs departments are no different.
According to the Department of Justice, the United States has been experiencing a downward trend in applications and the number of officers sworn-in since 2013. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports after years of steady growth, the number of full-time sworn-in officers dropped by more than 23,000 between 2013 and 2016. Meanwhile, a survey conducted by the National Police Foundation revealed 86% of U.S. departments are reporting a staffing shortage.

Community Raises Money to Help Homeless Man Reunite With His Family for the Holidays
A homeless man who formed a strong bond over the years with his Jessamine County, Kentucky, community has received a life-changing holiday gift. Collectively, they all raised enough money to send him over 400 miles to reunite with his family and rebuild his life.
Grandfather Brian Rolan became homeless in Nicholasville his home of 10 years in December 2019. Despite battling health issues and losing his job, Rolan always kept his head above water.
“It was kind of frustrating at first,” he admitted to LEX 18, “but then this voice in the back of my head kept telling me, ‘You’re going to be alright.’”
