It had been 701 days since UMD’s last postseason game, but it looked like it had been a week or two.
Unfazed by Western Michigan goals in the final minute of the second and third periods, UMD did what UMD does: It won a postseason game.
Freshman defenseman Connor Kelley’s second goal in as many games was his first career game-winner, and the Bulldogs advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinals Saturday night with a dramatic 5-4 win over Western Michigan in Grand Forks.
“I think their wing came out to me a bit, so I decided to shoot it,” Kelley said very matter-of-factly about his winning tally. Rounding out its individual awards for the 2020-21 season, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) unveiled its top honors on Thursday, with North Dakota claiming two of the four awards, while St. Cloud State and Western Michigan also each captured a major award.
North Dakota head coach Brad Berry repeated as the NCHC’s Herb Brooks Coach of the Year, while UND sophomore forward Shane Pinto was selected the Conference’s Player of the Year. St. Cloud State forward Veeti Miettinen was bestowed the NCHC’s Rookie of the Year award, while Western Michigan defenseman Kale Bennett was named the NCHC’s Senior Scholar-Athlete for 2020-21.

DULUTH, Minn. – We can all agree that we are living in the golden age of TV. There’s a show for just about anyone, whether you binge watch or catch it live. One of the top shows for UMD hockey fans is “The Swaneshow”, starring senior forward Nick Swaney, and his season finale at Amsoil Arena was one to remember.
Swaney recorded a hat trick in Saturday’s win over St. Cloud State. He also hit the 100 point mark for his career, the 59th player in program history to do so. The Lakeville native says he isn’t dwelling on the fact that his college career is wrapping up because there’s still a lot more work to do.
The Miami RedHawks traveled to Minnesota this weekend looking for retribution again against a Duluth team that beat them twice in Oxford last week.
They didn’t get it.
The RedHawks lost 8-1 Friday night and 3-1 Saturday to a Duluth team that boasts eight National Hockey League (NHL) draft picks and is currently ranked fifth in the country.
