Thinking it Through: UMD Concedes Momentum, Drops Home Opener

Duluth, MN, USA / NewsTalk 610 AM & 103.9 FM Jan 9, 2021 12:06 PM UMD is not the 1,000-day reigning national champion in college hockey by accident. The Bulldogs have done this by consistently playing to their identity as a program, which surrounds strong neutral zone play, puck possession, and wearing down opponents with depth. Hockey analyst Pat Micheletti once told me a hallmark of Scott Sandelin’s teams over the last eight to ten years is that you wouldn’t know what line is on the ice if you didn’t have a chart in your hand to tell you. In other words, when UMD is going, the fourth line plays like the top line, and vice versa.

Thinking it Through: The Captain Brings Home a Win

Duluth, MN, USA / NewsTalk 610 AM & 103.9 FM Jan 2, 2021 10:29 PM One of the reasons UMD has been the reigning national champions for over 1,000 days now is the team’s relatively consistent ability to overcome adversity. Adversity knocked on the Bulldogs’ door again Saturday night in St. Cloud, and once again UMD had a response, one good enough to pick up a 4-3 overtime win over St. Cloud State on a winning goal by junior captain Noah Cates. Before we got there, UMD had to overcome a few things. St. Cloud State’s power play got on a heater, scoring on its first three opportunities, twice on a five-minute major called against Tanner Laderoute that was, um, interesting. That sequence came a few seconds after a two-on-zero rush for UMD was whistled down because of a penalty being called on, um, the other team.

Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State making noise in the Omaha Pod

Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State making noise in NCHC s Omaha Pod As the NCHC s three-week stay in Nebraska enters its final weekend, the Bulldogs sit atop the conference standings and the Huskies have shown they can hang with the big dogs.   By Randy Johnson Text size Copy shortlink: Back in mid-October when the NCHC announced plans to gather its eight teams in a Pod in Omaha to play 40 games over three weeks, Commissioner Josh Fenton credited all involved for their efforts in coming to a consensus. Still, he warned of a false summit regarding the satisfaction of having a plan in place but not yet executed.

Thinking It Through: #AskBruceAnything About the 5-0-1 Bulldogs

Duluth, MN, USA / 95 KQDS Dec 12, 2020 5:23 PM Before we get to your questions, a few thoughts on Saturday’s 4-1 win over Denver that keeps UMD unbeaten at 5-0-1, and atop the NCHC at 17 points. While it wasn’t a perfect performance by any means, UMD continues to show signs of improvement. The Bulldogs were able to get their forecheck game going a bit more, and UMD defended better than it did in the first meeting against Denver. Sophomore goalie Ryan Fanti made 26 saves in another strong performance, and UMD rode power play goals by Jackson Cates and Cole Koepke to its fifth win in six games during pod play.
