100 and Counting: Ellwood City woman sweet to her community

ELLWOOD CITY Jennie Calve Safreed never had children of her own, but youngsters in the neighborhood knew she always had a lollipop or Tootsie Roll for them.
Most of those children are now grown and have youngsters of their own, but the community has not forgotten Jennie Calve Safreed, who turned 100 on March 11.
Because of the pandemic, a proper celebration couldn t be held, but well wishes have been pouring in from family and friends on her milestone birthday.
Safreed, of Ellwood City, was born in Caulonia, a small town in Calabria Province of Italy. Safreed often told the story of how her maternal grandfather hired Nick Calve as his apprentice to learn the shoemaking trade and his daughter, Catherine Tonese, and the young apprentice fell in love.
