Smallpox killed over 300 million people in in the 20th century. How many people died from smallpox in this century? None. Thanks to vaccinations, it has been eradicated worldwide.
At the peak of the 1940s-1950s polio epidemic, over 500,000 people worldwide every year would be paralyzed or die. When was the last case of polio in the United States? Thanks to a successful vaccination program, it was in 1979.
In 1918, 292,000 deaths were reported for flu in a three-month period. If there had been a flu vaccine as effective as, for example, the 2012 vaccine, 67% of the vaccinated population would not have contracted the flu, protecting them, and reducing the spread and fatalities.

Three progressive organizations in New London have epitomized timely, rational, compassionate responses to coronavirus. They adapted in significant ways to fulfill their missions. Early on, All Souls Congregation took measures to safeguard congregants. In-person services were canceled and replaced by virtual services. When congregants did interact with each other or community members, masks, social distancing, and handwashing became the norm. Using a variety of means, All Souls has maintained contact with, and supported its congregants throughout the pandemic.
FRESH New London, a food justice organization that operates community gardens, youth programs, and networks with other progressive groups, completely revamped its operations. Policies were implemented to ensure that its employees, youth, and anyone who spent time in the gardens stayed safe and limited the spread of coronavirus.
