Muscat: Efforts to protect children from COVID-19 by keeping them at home have unfortunately led to many of them putting on excess weight during the pandemic period.
No school, and a lack of outdoor activity is turning weight gain into a real problem for them, say health specialists in the country.
“Just a few days ago, I examined a girl aged seven, who had put on 20 to 25 kg last year,” said Dr Mohammed Saiful Islam, a paediatrician at Burjeel Hospital.
The current advancement in technology means that the population expects bigger and better tech, such as virtual reality, by 2030. But the latest technological innovations must be provided with universal access to learning. This ensures their utilisation is integrated with our understanding of the issues that impact our world today, as evident by the proportion of people wanting to learn about environmental issues, inclusivity and diversity.
The report found younger generations are driving the change towards online learning.
More than a fifth of millennials think it can provide similar benefits to a traditional form of education.
Almost half of the population think online classes will mean better access to education for disabled people, the study said.

Three-quarters of parents have argued over the broadband as they battle to work from home while ensuring their children attend online classes.
According to a report by UK full-fibre infrastructure provider and ISP Truespeed, 67% of parents say they need fast broadband connectivity because they work from home, but only 36% have a highly reliable home broadband connection. And 46% experience broadband problems at least once a week.
The survey of 2,000 parents, which was conducted by OnePoll, reveals that 24% have experienced video calls that shudder, freeze or even drop out entirely, while 16% have even struggled to get their broadband to co-operate when sending an email.

The Tamil Nadu government will provide free data card of 2 GB per day capacity to over 9.69 Lakh college students to enable them attend online classes till April this year, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said here on Sunday. The move was being effected since the colleges have remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and were conducting online classes, he said in a statement.
