Her mentor, Supreme Court lawyer Anip Sachthey, 65, was battling Covid-19 as well as continuing his treatment for liver cancer when his oxygen levels dropped on Monday, Chauhan said. His family secured an oxygen cylinder after hours of searching, but it could not be linked to the venturi mask, said Chauhan. Sachthey died at his residence that evening. He had served as a senior executive member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Delhi s Covid-19 death toll is likely a huge underestimation — Quartz India

April 23, 2021 As if scenes from overcrowded hospitals and SOS cries from people struggling to access oxygen and medicines were not enough, now images from New Delhi’s cremation grounds and graveyards are reflecting how bad things on the ground really are. The national capital, which posted low single-digit daily Covid-19 deaths for most of March, has seen a sharp increase in fatality rates over the last couple of weeks. On April 22, the city clocked 306 such deaths, according to government data. Since March 1, Delhi has seen over 2,284 Covid-related deaths, as per official data. There are fears that this tally may rise sharply in the coming weeks as the healthcare infrastructure in Delhi has been under stress for the last several days with thousands of new cases being reported on a daily basis. While India is witnessing its second wave of Covid-19, this is the fourth such spike in Delhi.

The lockdown doesn t end the pandemic but just slows it. Delhi’s municipal crematoriums are running out of the wood required for pyres because of the staggering number of coronavirus-related deaths in the city. The three Delhi Municipal Corporations - North, South and East - which are controlled by the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, have approached the state s Forest Department with a request to provide crematoriums with wood.

The official death toll for Delhi has been just over 300 per day. “Yes the reported deaths are about 300, but we are definitely having to cremate more than 600 daily, they are deliberately under-reporting deaths,” Jai Prakash, mayor of NDMC, said. On Monday, Delhi cremated 631 bodies and had 22 burials, according to data from Delhi’s three municipal corporations.
