Sentinel wins 2 statewide awards
Staff Report
COLUMBUS The Morrow County Sentinel took home two awards in the 2021 Ohio News Media Association Osman C. Hooper Non-Daily Newspaper Competition.
The paper received a second place for the “Special Graduation Scrapbook Edition: Class of 2020.”
Judge’s comments:
”I love the scrapbook design that begins on the cover. The editor’s story served as a good introduction to the issue and offered some storytelling and news judgment. Good job adding design elements so that not every photo is the same size and not every high school’s section looks the same. It’s good that the photos are large enough that you can tell what’s going on in them. There were even some action shots.”
Reflections: Historic cold waves hit county
By Evelyn Long - Contributing Columnist
Reading the history of Morrow County, I shiver when I read about the year of 1816, when there was no summer. According to the history I read, there was ice every month and on June 17 a terrible snow storm struck from New England to New York where many travelers froze to death.
According to the Morrow County History book, crops could never be planted that year because of the extreme cold and snow.
Since then we have had “cold waves” but nothing like the winter of 1816. I touched on winter storms a few weeks ago but while going through my pages of information, my memory was jogged when I read about the winters of both 1976-77 and 1977-78 the two coldest winters recorded in Ohio.
Reflections: Norval Heskett’s memories
By Evelyn Long - Contributing Columnist
Several months ago I shared some of the interview made with Norval Heskett on his 90th birthday. I want to share more of that interview when he described the history of his ancestors and his experiences.
At the time of his 90th birthday, he lived four miles south of Mount Gilead on State Route 61. Interviewed by the Morrow County Sentinel, Norval said he was born Feb. 22, 1857, north of Bethel in Morrow County. He was a resident of Morrow County his entire life with the exception of seven years when he lived just over the county line north of Centerburg.
Reflections: Remembering the Huckster wagons
By Evelyn Long - Contributing Columnist
Watching the numerous trucks delivering merchandise brought to mind the Huckster wagons. They were popular in the early part of the century bringing food and other wares to country homes.
I remember when I was a youngster waiting with my sisters and mother for the Smiley Huckster wagon to stop in front of our rural home where we would climb on board and scan the choice of candies and cookies while our mother selected more wholesome food.
Soon afterward, the Huckster ceased delivering Morrow County was served by several Huckster wagons in the early 1900s and at that time they were horse drawn. B. F. Smith’s wagon served customers in the Pulaskiville area.
