(Photo Credit: Louis Velasco/Anchorage School District) Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) - Kelly Shrein of Northwood Elementary in Anchorage School District was announced to be the 2021-2022 Alaska Teacher of the Year. The COVID-19 pandemic had made many schools adapt to distance learning, and during that period Shrein drove by each students’ house expressing how much they were missed as well as writing postcards, setting up Zooms, and making phone calls consistently through the Spring and Summer. As Alaska Teacher of the Year, Shrein will have a seat on Commissioner Johnson’s Teacher and Educator Advisory Council.

Hilton School District Principal Pleads Not Guilty to Charges

Apr 28, 2021 The Hilton school district principal accused of molesting boys at school has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Kirk Ashton was arraigned today. A judge has set bail at 250 thousand dollars cash. Ashton is accused of molesting 11 boys during the past several years at Northwood Elementary School. District Attorney Sandra Doorley has said more potential victims have come forward and she expects more formal charges.

Hilton principal pleads not guilty to child sex abuse charges Andrew Banas & WHAM Staff UP NEXT (WHAM) - The elementary school principal in Hilton accused of sexually abusing at least 11 students over several years pleaded not guilty to charges against him Wednesday. Kirk Ashton appeared in a virtual court hearing Wednesday morning to answer to 25 counts filed against him. The principal at Northwood Elementary School in the Hilton Central School District was arrested last month after an investigation uncovered allegations of several young boys who had been sexually abused by Ashton. Parents of two boys who attended the school told 13WHAM News the boys were invited to have lunch with Ashton in his office, reportedly often in groups of two or three. Some were allegedly asked to sit on Principal Ashton’s lap. Sometimes, the office door was reportedly open – other times, a parent said, it was shut.
