Norfolk s council party leaders encourage election votes

Toby the Norfolk Terrier outside the polling station at Cromer Community Centre.Picture: ANTONY KELLY - Credit: Archant Next month Norfolk residents have the chance to make their voices heard and make a real difference in their community.   On Thursday, May 6, Norfolk goes to the polls for local elections, selecting who should run the county council, Norwich City Council and become police and crime commissioner.   Now, leaders of Norfolk’s various parties are encouraging people to have their say in three weeks.   Andrew Proctor, leader of the Norfolk Conservatives, said there have been concerns in terms of people voting this year, but stressed polling stations would be Covid-safe, with councils doing everything they could to make sure you can vote safely.

The Norfolk Labour group is putting forward the suggestion as part of its manifesto, suggesting disused high street shops could become children’s centres and retirement homes.   The Labour lead for children’s services, Mike Smith-Clare, said the group wanted to take advantage of spacious high street premises and provide families with a convenient place for shopping.   “If we extend those centres to provide child care too, it will help those working on, in and near high streets and make it easier to come to work,” Mr Smith-Clare said.  

Norfolk Labour accused of hypocrisy after canvassing comment

Published: 5:06 PM April 13, 2021    Steve Morphew, leader of the Labour group at Norfolk County Council and councillor for Catton Grove, in which Ingram Micro is based. - Credit: Denise Bradley Norfolk Labour has been accused of “rank hypocrisy” over comments on the Green Party continuing to canvass for the upcoming election.   On Monday, Labour accused Green Party councillors and activists of continuing to canvass over the weekend – despite a pause from other major parties out of respect for the death of Prince Philip.     One Labour activist singled out Green Party Councillor Denise Carlo for dropping off leaflets on Sunday.   Now, Sonia Harrison, who lives in Norwich s Wensum ward, has accused the group of being hypocritical, saying she received a leaflet on Sunday for Labour’s candidates.
