Video games don’t require a complex story to be fun. In fact, a lot of games don’t require a story at all, like
Tetris. Even role-playing games, which are all about going on adventures in often exotic settings, don’t require a complex story to be enjoyable. Satisfying storytelling is ultimately all about the execution, and a simple story told well may be preferable to a complex story that requires a wiki to fully grasp. (I am so sorry for that indirect diss,
Xenosaga. I still love you.) However, with that in mind, it is important to distinguish that telling a simple story is not an excuse to tell a bland story in an RPG.
We open on a flashback sequence from when Shu Bi and Kai were still children. Soldiers are seen leading them and other children in chains, because their village could not afford the tax and traded them in instead. Shu Bi and Kai grate against their capture but vow to make themselves known to the Capital and be free.
Back to the present, events are set in motion across Lingalind. At the border of the neutral zone, a
sentai team colorful band of mercenaries known as the Four Fiends assault an outpost and cause elemental havoc. Meanwhile, our heroes aboard the Granedger are planning on crossing through the neutral area to trade for supplies.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Shu Bi and Kai Rhodan started in the most hellish of situations. Their village wasn’t able to afford their taxes so they traded the two boys instead. They get food so revolting that it should go straight into the deepest pit on the Earth. They left to survive in a pit with other children in a battle of survival of the fittest. But despite all of this, Shu Bi looks to a promising future where he and Kai can climb to the top of the Rekka empire and change the system that wrongs them. It’s sweet to see these two stick together for so long with the same ideal.
