A Taranaki man’s illegal pāua haul of more than eight times the daily limit has landed him a hefty fine. Arana Kipa-Dakin had been gathering shellfish from Kawaroa reef in New Plymouth on November 16 when he was stopped by a fishery officer. The 46-year-old was found with 85 pāua, 84 of which were undersized. The daily recreational limit of the delicacy is 10 per person, with a minimum legal size of 85 millimetres in the amateur Taranaki pāua fishery area.

The victim closed her eyes and felt a blow to the side of her head. She got back on to the bed and Almao grabbed her and pulled her from side to side. She got out of the bedroom and called police on her flatmate s cellphone, the summary said. Police were called, but Almao resisted arrest and pulled his arms away when officers tried to handcuff him.

A driver who indicated he would plead guilty to causing a fatal crash which killed a Taranaki motorcyclist has again had a warrant issued for his arrest. Abraham Sovea, of Manukau, is charged with dangerous driving causing death and being an unlicensed driver after a Waitangi Day 2020 crash on State Highway 3, near Mōkau, that resulted in the death of motorcyclist Chris McKay. Sovea was due to appear before Judge Gregory Hikaka in the New Plymouth District Court on Thursday but failed to appear for a second time and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

A Taranaki gangster involved in shooting up a rival gang’s pad and other violence charges involving firearms has had his jail sentence reduced by the Court of Appeal. In July, Tyson Disraeli Hutchinson was jailed for five years and four months after pleading guilty to a range of charges including participating in an organised criminal group, possession of a firearm, commission of crime with a firearm, discharge of a firearm with reckless disregard and assault.
