In another life, these three boys might have been best friends

We don’t envy the judge in this case who had to decide. The obvious choice is always to say ‘a life for a life’: anyone who takes a life loses theirs in return. It doesn’t bring back the person we loved and lost, but it gives us a sense of justice and it also makes us feel safer that a killer is behind bars. Reading the tribute put out yesterday by Josh Harling’s family is likely to make us feel this all the more. This painful statement takes us through the whole of Josh’s tragically short life – and it must now seem all the shorter to his parents: it must feel like just yesterday that he was watching Monsters Inc and Spiderman, drawing every day and telling his family about what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Yesterday he was found guilty of murder, carrying a weapon in a public place and conspiracy to cause GBH with intent along with his best friend Benjamin Eyles.
