RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. – Police in Florida are searching for the person who shot into an apartment and killed a 7-year-old boy who was sleeping inside.
The boy s 28-year-old mother was injured in the shooting which happened early Wednesday, Riviera Beach police said during a news conference.
Police Chief Nathan Osgood said the shooting was targeted, but it was unclear if the shooter knew there were children inside the apartment.
The boy, whose name has not been released, another sibling and their parents were asleep when the shots rang out early Wednesday. The boy was shot several times and his mother was hit at least once, police said.

The department will host an outreach event called One Love, One Fight to End Gun Violence from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wells Recreation Center, located at 2409 Avenue H West.
Chief Nathan Osgood said the goal is to encourage children to participate in the ongoing effort to reduce crime in the city.
The event will feature food, games, and music to send a message of unity throughout the area.
RIVIERA BEACH – A 7-year-old boy was killed and his mother was injured while they were sleeping after someone shot into their home early Wednesday, according to city police.
During a press conference Wednesday afternoon outside the apartment building where the shooting took place, north of Blue Heron Boulevard, Riviera Beach Police Chief Nathan Osgood said the shooting was targeted, but it was unclear if the shooter knew there were children inside.
“We have a kid who would have been a future governor, future president, future doctor, lawyer, school teacher or news journalist who is not here today,” Osgood said.
No one is in custody at this time, but Osgood said detectives are working leads from those in the neighborhood and are looking into past incidents. The chief did not provide further details.
