(FIJI ROADS AUTHORITY/Handout via Xinhua) Cyclone Yasa has caused damages to houses and landslides across Fiji. Hundreds of Fijians have moved into evacuation centers set up by the Fijian government in response to the tropical cyclone.  SUVA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) Fiji on Thursday declared a 30-day state of natural disaster as the category 5 tropical cyclone Yasa hit the island country. While making the announcement, Fiji s Director for National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Vasiti Soko said that developments may lead to  additional regulations.

Close to its centre the TC Yasa currently has winds upto 155 kilometres per hour with momentary gusts to 220 kilometres per hour. A hurricane warning remains in force for Yacata, Cicia, Nayau, Vanuabalavu, Lakeba, Oneata, Vanuavatu, Moce, Kabara, Namuka-i-Lau, Ogea, Vatoa and Ono-i-Lau. A storm warning remains in force for Taveuni and nearby smaller islands and Koro Island.

The centre is currently just over Savusavu.

[Image: Fiji Meterological Services] The centre of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa is located about 50 kilometres North North West of Koro and continues to track into the Koro Sea and then to Southern Lau. Yasa is taking this path after leaving a trail of destruction in Vanua Levu. The cyclone gained speed yesterday and the centre made landfall late yesterday afternoon over Bua Province instead of the projected 8pm timeline by the Nadi Weather Office. This was based on the system moving faster than expected however it was already highlighted that hurricane-force winds were expected before the centre passes.

[Image: Fiji Meteorological Services] The centre of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa is now located about 60 kilometres South-East of Labasa and continues to move in a southeasterly direction as it goes over the Koro Sea and over Southern Lau. Close to its centre the cyclone is expected to have average winds up to 220 kilometres per hour with momentary gusts to 315 kilometres per hour.
