Dec 15, 2020 04:39:41 PM Social Democratic Liberal party leader Viliame Gavoka is urging all Fijians to take proper precautions as advised by the Fiji Meteorological Service that Severe Tropical Cyclone (TC) Yasa Category 3 will continue to intensify. Gavoka has urged fellow Fijians to take heed of the advice and be updated with the weather updates given by the Fiji Met Services. “When a disaster strikes people may not have much time to respond. Fiji’s families will cope best by preparing for disaster before it strikes,” he said. “As TC YASA shows a projected landfall in Fiji this week, I offer a few words of advice to all Fijians to take heed of warnings from the weather office and the Fiji National Disaster Management Office,” he said.
Tropical Cyclone Yasa has been upgraded to a category four system. Nadi Weather Office has confirmed that the system continues to intensify and could even reach category five by the time it reaches the Fiji Group. The weather office has projected that the storm will intensify to a category five cyclone just north of Rotuma on Thursday. Fiji Meteorological Services senior forecaster Steven Meke said the eye of the cyclone is expected to pass between the two main islands by Thursday based on current projections. Meke said people living in Lomaiviti, the Yasawas, the Western parts of Viti Levu are to expect some damaging gale-force winds.
