Nachtigal dam construction: Works resume after government mediation

(Business in Cameroon) - Workers employed for the construction of the 420MW Nachtigal dam are back to work after the strikes they started on February 3 and on March 1, 2021, credible sources reveal. According to the sources, they resumed work on March 12, 2021. For about six weeks then, they were on strike to denounce the violation of their employment contracts and the poor working conditions imposed on them by the managers of Société camerounaise de construction du barrage de Nachtigal, the main subcontractor of the project company Nachtigal Hydro Power Company. They resumed work after negotiations conducted by the Ministers of Labour and Social Security as well as Water and Energy. Obviously, during the negotiations, both the employer and employees found common grounds with the promises made to clear non-accommodation allowances representing 25% of the base pay.

Cameroon: Authorities seal over 7300 tons of rebar illegally imported by construction company CHEC

(Business in Cameroon) - Weeks ago, the Cameroonian government (through the Ministries of Trade, Mines, Industries and Technological development as well as the Standards and Quality Agency-ANOR) placed seals on a shipment of over 7,300 tons of rebar. The construction material was imported by Chinese group CHEC for the 2 nd phase of construction works at the Kribi deep seaport, which was commissioned in the Southern region, in 2018. Based on an import restriction placed on rebar in 2016, Cameroonian authorities estimate the material was illegally imported. Indeed, on May 31, 2016, Magloire Séraphin Fouda (the secretary-general of the Prime Ministry) sent a correspondence to the Minister of Finance (MINFI) informing him that to protect local production, the Prime Minister has ordered the suspension, until further notice, of rebar imports.
