Five Vietnamese fishermen and vessel held near Mantanani island, Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has impounded a foreign vessel carrying five Vietnamese fishermen about 17.1 nautical miles from Mantanani island, off Kota Belud on the north-western coast of the state. Sabah and Labuan Maritime director First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the boat and the crew members, aged between 17 and 40, have been brought to Sepanggar Maritime Jetty for further investigation after the incident on Wednesday (April 14) morning. In a statement here on Thursday (April 15), First Admiral Mohd Rosli said the capture was following a strategic framework designed under Op Naga Timur and Op Kuda Laut aimed at curbing foreign vessels encroaching on Sabah s waters.

Fish bombers flee after catching sight of MMEA patrol

KOTA KINABALU: Four fishermen, suspected of using fish bombs, dived off their boat and swam to shore to evade capture by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol in the waters off Pulau Gaya here on Tuesday (Feb 2) evening. Though they escaped, MMEA managed to seize their pump boat and recovered some 200kg of suspected bombed fish as well as various pieces of fish bombing equipment. Sabah MMEA director First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said a patrol boat carrying out operations under Ops Sejahtera and Ops Naga Timur around the waters off Kota Kinabalu spotted the boat near Pulau Gaya, one of the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.
