NM Athletes Named to SICL Teams by RD Keep Five boys and three girls earned spots on the South Iowa Cedar League baseball and softball teams following 2021 competition. Madison McKay, Zoe Deucore and Regan Grewe earned honors along with Blake Readshaw, Dylan Klinker, Sam Terpstra, Ty Kelderman and Grant Smith. McKay and Deucore earned a first team nod. McKay earned the spot as a pitcher with a 13-9 mark. She was joined as a first team pitcher with Sigourney’s Carly Goodwin and Denali Conover of Lynnville-Sully. McKay was second in the conference with a school record 174 strikeouts in a season. She was fifth in the league in wins with 13 with a 2.46 ERA.

NM Boys, Girls Sweep HLV by RD Keep NEW SHARON – North Mahaska plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday to edge visiting HLV 5-4. The victory pushed the Warhawks into a tie for first in the league with Lynnville-Sully. The Warhawk girls scored four runs in the first and held HLV scoreless to win 5-0. North Mahaska drilled 11 hits, all singles, to secure the victory. Seniors Blake Readshaw and Dylan Klinker each drove in two runs and junior Jayden Stout drove in another to lead the way. HLV was the first to score in the top of the second inning. NM tied the game in the bottom half of the inning then the Warriors took control with three in the top of the third. NM scored a run in its half of the third to trail 4-2. The Warhawks tied the game when they plated a pair in the bottom of the fifth and scored the game winner. Senior Grant Smith stole two bases and scored a run. Sophomore Nash Smith also stole a base and scored.

Eagles and Warhawks Square Off in Second Round

The Keota Eagle boys basketball team is back on their home floor tonight in the second round of the class 1A district tournament when they welcome North Mahaska. The Eagles come into the game with an overall record of 19-2, champions of the east division of the South Iowa Cedar League and overall conference co-champions. They are ranked ninth in this week’s poll from the Iowa Associated Press. The Eagles beat Twin Cedars to open the playoffs Tuesday, behind 21 points from Sam Sieren, 12 from Carson Sprouse and 11 for Luke Hammen. On the season, the Eagles are led by Hammen and Sprouse both at 16 points per game. Hammen and Brady Duwa each pull down five boards per game. Sprouse averages three steals and Duwa three assists to lead the team.
