FREEDOM – It may just feel like playing in the dirt for many of Jeanine Ging s middle school pupils, but she said what she s teaching them outside goes much deeper than that.
Ging is a science and math teacher at Freedom Area Middle School. She was recently recognized as a Harmony Hero for her efforts in educating students about pollinator protection, gardening, hydroponics, aquaponics, water quality and more through her converted courtyard classroom eco-education program.
Ging received the Harmony Hero award for the month of May, and will receive in-service training from an entomologist about integrated pest management practices for her school. Ging also received sustainable product essentials for eco-education and outdoor adventures, according to a press release. Additionally she ll be considered for a grand prize paid trip to Mexico in March 2022 to visit the Kingdom of Monarchs habitat, where millions of butterflies migrate each year.

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. – One Pulaski County teacher is being recognized for her efforts to bring nature into the classroom.
Carley Pavan was selected as a Harmony Hero for helping her students create a sensory nature trail that highlights different monarch species and pollinators found in the trails.
The Harmony Hero Award Program, a program a part of EarthKind’s2021 Year of the Monarch national initiative, recognizes one K-12 teacher each month. To be recognized, teachers must be committed to including eco-education initiatives into their curriculum to help students get more connected to nature.
