Feed the Need in Durham (FTND) has received its largest one-time donation ever in honour of the Durham Crusaders’ ‘I Play for Soup’ initiative.
As part of the Chevrolet Canada’s ‘Good Deeds Cup’ campaign, in January 2021, the Durham Crusaders U13 Green/Blue hockey team created the I Play for Soup initiative.
With a goal of raising some soup for FTND, while encouraging others across the country to do the same, the team committed to donating one can of soup for every hour of gaming they accumulated as they were unable to be on the ice.

“We’d like to, if possible, continue the work with the Super HEROS,” coach Nathan Strueby said.
“To see the Super HEROS program in pretty much all the major centres in Canada.”
“We held a virtual watch party on Zoom and everybody nearly hit the ceiling when they saw our team’s name come up on the screen,” said co-coach Matt Belanger.
The Good Deeds Cup goes annually to the Canadian youth hockey team which does the most to give back to their community.
“We made kindness a focus for our team this season,” said Belanger, taking note of the message from the B.C. health officer.
Team members saw a broadcast advertisement for the Good Deeds Cup during the 2021 world junior championship and Admirals manager and treasurer Anna Warhurst spearheaded the effort.
