When visitors can hug again

COVID’s lockdowns and health precautions sparked a revolution in social life – especially for nursing home residents.
Teleconferencing by laptop and tablet replaced in-person family visits, which have always been critical to emotional health. After COVID closed nursing homes to the outside world, the closest approximation to getting up close-and-personal with spouses, children and grandchildren was waving and smiling through window glass while chatting by cellphone.
“I felt kind of isolated, but at least we could see them,” said Pauline Bolduc, 93, of Laconia, who has lived at St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Laconia for two and a half years. “I missed being able to hug and touch them.”

30 nursing homes across Virginia may be under new ownership later this year
Would affect nursing homes in our region including the Roanoke Valley, Lynchburg and Southside

ROANOKE, Va. – One of the biggest nursing facilities in Virginia is in the process of changing ownership, according to documents 10 News uncovered.
The change would affect 30 nursing homes currently owned by Medical Facilities of America, accounting for 4,000 beds across the state, with many being in Southwest and Central Virginia.
A 10 News Investigation found documents filed with the Virginia Department of Health asking for a Change of Ownership (CHOW) for 30 health and rehabilitation facilities in the following locations: Albermarle, Appomattox, Bayside, Beaufont, Berkshire, Bowling Green, Burke, Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Culpeper, Franklin, Gretna, Hanover, Harrisonburg, Henrico, Lake Manassas, Louisa, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Parham, Piney Forest, Princess Anne, Pulaski, Raleigh Court,

Recently added to the list: COVID-19, which she tested positive for on her 105th birthday. She sailed through the two-week quarantine like a champ without any symptoms, said her granddaughter, Shawn Laws O Neil.
The tale triggered a flurry of recent articles; her uplifting health news spread far and wide, resulting in an outpouring of greetings from around the globe all of which reached DeClerck at her residence in Mystic Meadows Rehab and Nursing Center in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey.
There, ensconced in a room adorned with pictures of saints and an olive wood cross from the Holy Land, she recently shared her advice for a long life: prayer without ceasing; love without constraint; abiding concern for others; an open door; no junk food; and, oh yes, nine golden raisins soaked in gin every day as a tonic.
