“Māori businesses and owners in this region aren’t often celebrated enough, so this was a chance to really show the variety we have in this region.” Waa said there was a variety of food, weaving, carving, jewellery, candles and korowai (cloaks) at the market.

Organisers were pleased with the turnout to the inaugural Maori Market Day at the Te Aitarakihi multicultural centre. “For us, it was a huge success. We had great feedback from everyone who turned up, and we will definitely try to host another one in the new year,” she said. “There’s also an opportunity to bring in other cultural groups into the mix as well, along with stallholders from outside of South Canterbury.”
