LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) â The Niagara County Health Department is switching the way they re distributing the COVID-19 vaccine as demand for the shot decreases. For the first time since the pandemic began, I did not order vaccine this week. I know that there are probably a couple dozen more counties that are doing the exact same thing because we don t have enough people wanting it, Dan Stapleton, the Niagara County Public Health Director, said.

NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) â From directing traffic to putting shots in arms, volunteers aiding the Niagara County Department of Health are helping to get people the COVID-19 vaccine. We decided we could either sit on the sidelines or be part of the solution, Wesley Pickreign, a 65-year-old retired school principal, said, I want us to heal. I want us to get back to normal. I really feel that being here helps us do that as a community and I want to be able to help any way I can.

Nursing homes and hospitals in Niagara County are already distributing the COVID vaccine through federal and state programs. The county itself will begin its own Point of Dispensing sites, or PODS, beginning next Tuesday. The drive-through operation will first serve healthcare personnel who have direct contact with patients.

“Doctors offices, staff providers from dental offices, EMS - Emergency Medical Services personnel, people who drive the ambulances, paramedics and so on. Firefighters, because of the emergency medical response that they usually are involved in and public health personnel who actually will be doing vaccinations,” said Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel Stapleton.
