RBI sets up panel to suggest steps for strengthening, consolidating urban cooperative banks Photo Credit: PTI The Reserve Bank on Monday set up a committee to draw a vision document for strengthening urban cooperative banks (UCBs) and exploring the potential of consolidation in the sector. The committee, to be headed by former RBI Deputy Governor N S Vishwanathan, will suggest effective measures for faster rehabilitation and resolution of Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) and also assess their potential for consolidation in the sector. The panel will draw up a vision document for a vibrant and resilient urban co-operative banking sector having regards to the Principles of Cooperation as well as depositors interest and systemic issues, said the terms of reference of the committee which will be required to submit its report to the RBI in three months.

Govt committed to improve agri infrastructure: Chintala

Talking to journalists Nabard chairman G.N.Chintala said the central govt would double down on efforts so as to improve agriculture infrastructure in the country. As per the new budget, the central govt will allocate Rs 40 thousand crore for the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund and Rs 15 lakh crore for agriculture credit. Nabard is also taking steps in order to help cooperative bodies realize their potential like computerizing PACS and transforming them into multi-service centres. Chintala said this to newsmen after his inaugural speech at the 80 th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Economics at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

NABARD has said the strategy of achieving higher growth in agriculture needs to be based on forming new farmer producer organisations (FPOs) and nurturing the existing ones, an official said on Wednesday. As of January 2021, about 8,500 FPOs have been promoted in the country by various agencies with 4,868 of them by NABARD alone, its chairman Dr G R Chintala told reporters at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here. Keeping in mind that there must also be a concurrent evaluation of whether some course correction was required, NABARD conducted an internal study on FPOs in Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan covering 1,886 farmers having membership in 39 FPOs and 971 farmers without any membership, he said.
