Songs of Praise shines light on Durham walks this Sunday

THIS weekend’s Songs of Praise episode will feature a pilgrimage to Durham Cathedral. Canon Kate Bottley, presenter of the religious series who also appeared in Gogglebox, joined pilgrims on the final day of their walk along the Way of Learning – one of the new Northern Saints Trails that celebrate the lives of local saints such as Cuthbert, Hilda and Bede. The Bishop of Durham Paul Butler, his wife, Rosemary, and Northern Saints Trail Coordinator David Pott, completed four of the Ways between Palm Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. The Bishop of Jarrow Sarah Clark completed three. Mr Pott first contacted the Songs of Praise team when the inaugural pilgrimages along the routes were being planned back in 2019.

Tyler James receives mystery £5 donation from 'Rachel'

A TOUCHING letter from a kind-hearted stranger managed to find its way to a teenager who got into trouble while grieving the death of his friend. Tyler James, who is facing a £10,000 fine for hosting a balloon release in memory of Jamie McKitten, received the moving note and a £5 donation on Monday. But the sender did not know his address so sent it to ‘Tyler James whose friend died’, c/o Chester-le-Street Railway Station, DH3 3EE. The letter signed by ‘Rachel’ explains she had read about the tragic death of Jamie in a newspaper report. The popular 17-year-old died at Chester-le-Street Railway Station at the end of March.

Police error sees Great Lumley balloon launch teen fined twice

BBC News Published image captionTyler James said he tried to cancel the balloon launch he had organised but a large crowd still gathered A teenager who paid a £400 fine after organising a memorial balloon launch has been hit with a fresh £10,000 penalty following a police blunder. Tyler James, 19, organised the event on 11 April in memory of his 17-year-old friend Jamie McKitten who died in March and about 200 people turned up. Mr James said he crowd-funded to pay the initial fine but will have to go to court to contest the larger amount. Durham Police blamed an administrative error for issuing the first wrong fine.
