Progress tour conducted by Spooky Nook, end of year opening date announced

View Comments Construction progress was unveiled Friday morning at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex, as the developer of the project gave a behind the scenes tour to show off the 1.3 million-square-foot facility. The city of Hamilton is partnering with Spooky Nook Sports, the largest indoor sports complex in the country near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to redevelop the former Champion Paper Mill property, a 40-plus-acre brownfield site on the Great Miami riverfront. Hamilton city officials and and the developer say significant progress has been made on the Spooky Nook projects, Mill 1 (athletic side) and Mill 2 (hotel/conference center). Spooky Nook is one of the biggest development projects in the Cincinnati region, with an approximate price tag of $150 million to build, and an expected draw of one million visitors annually.

A Great Miami shark tale

By Dan Armitage, host of Buckeye Sportsman, Ohio’s longest running outdoor radio show Haley Weidner was walking along the Great Miami River in Piqua’s Groveside Park late last month when she detected a foul smell. Following her nose to the riverbank, she came upon the head of a shark that had washed up on the shoreline.  After poking it with her foot to confirm it really was the head of a real (formerly) live shark, CNN Newsource reported that Weidner posted word of her unusual find on social media and contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). According to reports, wildlife officials at first figured someone had caught the shark on a trip to the coast and brought the head back to Ohio.
