GUEST SPEAKER After spending over a decade working under the leadership of Congressman John Conyers (ranking member, House Judiciary Committee) as a congressional staffer, Knott furthered her interest in the political arena by joining the staff of Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) as policy director. DWEJ is an award-winning social enterprise, dedicated to Detroit becoming the global model of a vibrant urban center, with an emphasis on promoting sustainable redevelopment and environmental justice. As an environmental justice advocate, Knott arranged a “Toxic Tour” for government officials and business leaders, to raise awareness of the environmental issues impacting Detroit’s neighborhoods. Due to her successful advocacy efforts, she was invited to speak to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Rule Writers. Lakeshore Advantage launches educational series on certification

Sentinel Staff ZEELAND A local economic development organization is offering an educational series for minority-owned businesses. Lakeshore Advantage released the Certify Your Business video series Thursday, Feb. 11, for woman, veteran, minority and LGBTQ-owned businesses. The series offers education on the benefits of certification, including an overview of the process, cost and timeline. “Each certification process, depending on your certification category, is a bit different,” said Lakeshore Advantage President Jennifer Owens. “No need for businesses to worry because there are expert support organizations that are ready to help, featured in the video series.” Professionals included in the series are: Jim Bos of Yanfeng, Joe Matthews of Gentex, Michelle Richards of the Great Lakes Women s Business Council and Kevin Heard of the Detroit LGBT Chamber of Commerce among others.
