CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Rory McIlroy found his comfort zone at Quail Hollow and left with a trophy he badly needed.
McIlroy closed with a 3-under 68 and made it tough on himself at the end Sunday, driving into the hazard left of the 18th fairway and needing two putts from 45 feet for a one-shot victory in the Wells Fargo Championship.
What mattered was ending 18 months since his last victory in the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, along with finding a strong semblance of his game as he prepares to return to Kiawah Island for the PGA Championship.

MIAMI, May 10, 2021 (BSS/AFP) – The United States, buoyed by a 4-0 performance from Ricky Castillo, beat Great Britain & Ireland 14-12 on Sunday for a third straight title in the Walker Cup amateur golf match.
Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, provided a spectacular backdrop for the biennial trans-Atlantic match-play showdown for amateurs, which was rendered even more of a test after a stomach bug left members of both teams weak and unable to practice or play for three days.
With so many affected, pairings were altered and alternates, normally not even on-site at the Walker Cup, were called into action.

A stomach bug, not COVID-19, has left several participants in the Walker Cup feeling under the weather on the eve of the competition, which is scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla.
The Walker Cup pits the top amateurs from the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland every other year. Over the past 24 hours, a number of players from both the GBI and USA teams have been treated for gastrointestinal issues and are currently under observation by medical professionals at the teams hotel, said a joint statement issued Friday by the USGA and RA. All players from both teams have tested negative in their daily screenings and COVID-19 has been ruled out as the cause. The players have adhered to the strict health and safety guidelines established as a code of conduct for the match.
